A study of file-sharing's effects on
music sales says online music trading appears to have had little
part in the recent slide in CD sales.
For the study, researchers at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina tracked music downloads over 17 weeks, matching data on file transfers with actual market performance of the songs and albums being downloaded. Even high levels of file-swapping
seemed to translate into an effect on album sales that was
"statistically indistinguishable from zero," they wrote. Nearly 70% of the peer-to-peer application users said they spend more than 16 minutes a day sharing files and close to 16% said they spend more than one hour a day doing so. Almost 60% of the employees polled said they are not concerned about whether the Recording Industry Association of America will take legal action against their employers for the distribution of copyrighted material on the corporate network. Over 300,000,000 people have
installed Peer-To-Peer (P2P) Software to download their favorite
artists' MP3's, Movies, Software and Videogames! Download Free Music Now!

MUSIC HISTORY
|
|
48 years ago Elvis Presley had the most charting records this year with 17. Billboard reports Pat Boone was next with five, followed by Fats Domino, Little Richard and the Platters with three each. (1956) 42 years ago The Rebels' instrumental "Wild Weekend" is released on Swan Records. It makes it to #8 on the pop chart. (1962) 42 years ago The Tornadoes' "Telstar" becomes the first record by a British group to top the American pop chart. The song was inspired by the launching of the Telstar commu-satellite in July. (1962) 36 years ago In an article in the New York Times, New York Philharmonic Orchestra conductor Leonard Bernstein expresses his enthusiasm for the New York Rock and Roll Ensemble, a group whose repertoire includes both rock and classical music. (1968) 35 years ago John Lennon and Yoko Ono meet for one hour with Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in Ottawa. Earlier in the day, they saw the Minister of Health, John Munro and discussed drug abuse. (1969) 29 years ago Ike and Tina Turner are robbed of $86,000 when a suitcase containing concert receipts is robbed. (1975) 28 years ago Bob Seger begins his breakthrough to stardom as his album, "Live Bullet," goes gold. The album features in-concert versions of "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man," "Beautiful Loser," "Get Out of Denver," "Travelin' Man" and "Katmandu." (1976) 26 years ago Faces drummer Kenney Jones becomes the Who's drummer, replacing the late Keith Moon who died two months earlier. (1978) 25 years ago The first of three concerts for the people of Kampuchea are held at London's Hammersmith Odeon. On the bill are Paul McCartney, the Clash, Elvis Costello, the Who, Rockpile and many other rock stars. (1979) 23 years ago Sotheby's in London holds a rock & roll auction. Though the majority of the stuff is sold for far more than was expected -- an enameled Abbey Road street sign went for $600, an autographed program from the Beatles Royal Command Performance sold for $2,000 -- other items were disapointing. For example, a jacked once worn by Tom Jones only bought in $12. (1981) 13 years ago Gregg Allman makes his acting debut as a drug kingpin in the flick, "Rush." (1991) |
