The iPod mini – not worth the high price tag. The iPod mini is supposed to be Apple's answer to the cheaper and smaller wave of digital music players from Rio, Dell, Samsung, and other manufacturers that have bombarded the market during the past year. Many of the new digital music players can be picked up for around $150 and can hold up to 30 songs before a memory stick must be purchased to store more music. The mini was supposed to hit stores on Feb. 20 with a retail price of $250. This is a lot of money for a 4-gigabyte hard drive that can hold up to 1,000 songs. Comparing the mini to its big brother the iPod. For $50 more, you can hold nearly 10,000 songs on its 15-gigabyte hard drive. All digital music players including the mini can play the MP3 format; this is the most common format when you copy a CD to your computer to put the songs on a player. What the consumer isn't told is that Apple's iTunes online music store sells the vast majority of digital music in AAC. The only portable device that can play these files is Apple's iPod family. Most other online music stores such as Napster, Wal-Mart and Best Buy sell songs in Microsoft's WMA format, which can be universally played on all digital music players -- all players except iPod. The mini iPod is scheduled now to hit stores sometime in April but giving it’s limitations and high price tag – it doesn’t seem to be worth the wait.
