Music comes in many styles and formats; here at
MusicHoncho.com we have outlined a few of the different types of
music in detail.
Rock Music
The category of Rock music describes a group of related music styles
that have dominated popular music since the 1950s. Rock music began in
the United States but has been distinctly shaped by many other styles
ranging anywhere from gospel to classical music. Rock 'n' roll became
the first style of music to attempt to appeal directly to young people.
It developed through mixing African American rhythm and blues with
American country music.
Country Music
It all began in 1927 in Bristol, Tennessee when Jimmie Rodgers and the
Carter Family signed recording contracts with Victor Records – music
would never by the same with two of the biggest Country Music acts
paving the path to Country Music’s success.
Heavy Metal Music
When did heavy metal commence? According to most metal annals, the first
outbreak came from the Kinks with "You Really Got Me" and the Who with
"My Generation" around 1964. As for the first heavy metal artist, that
position belongs to Alice Cooper, whose band was founded in 1965 under
the name The Spiders. However, heavy metal was not to truly flourish
until the year of 1967 and Alice Cooper was to become embedded in the
collective mind of the world until 1971 with the classic Love It To
Death.
Rhythm & Blues Music
When African and European music first began to merge to create what
eventually became the blues, the slaves sang songs filled with words
telling of their excessive suffering and poverty. Rhythm & Blue music
gave rise to the spiritual, and all human works of art for their
profound despair. They gave voice to the mood of separation that
prevailed in the construction camps of the South.
Alternative Music
1996 showed that music that is an alternative to the mainstream could be
popular. That's what Nirvana and grunge rock music started out as being
but by 1996 you couldn't get more mainstream than Nirvana, Pearl Jam,
Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. Pearl Jam is probably more alternative
now since they are farther away from the mainstream than ever before.
Grunge Rock Music
The 80's brought us American punk, Indie rock and a hardcore rock that
would be an important stepping-stone to Grunge rock music with such
artists as The Germs, Minor Threat, The Minutemen, Bad Religion, Social
Distortion, REM, Bad Brains, Fugazi, Sonic Youth etc. By the mid 80's
the first wave of grunge was born in the US focussed on the west coast
and in dense scenes across the country. Bands like The Pixies, Jane's
Addiction, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Soul Asylum, Skin Yard, The
Melvins,The Replacements and many more would be born.
Rap Music
Rap or hip-hop, type of music was formed in the mid-1970s amongst black
and Hispanic performers in New York City, at first connected with an
athletic technique of dancing, known a broad as breakdancing. The word
rap, was created from a 1960s slang word for conversation, generally
involved types of chanting, often improvised, street poetry accompanied
by a montage of well-known recordings, usually disco or funk.
Punk Music
Punk music began in England in 1976 and pretty much ended in 1981.
Basically changing the social upbringing that other western cultures
allocate with it. Although punk music, which called itself punk music,
was a very English thing until the early eighties, the bands which led
Malcolm McLaren to create a band called the Sex Pistols in early 1976
were American, principally the New York Dolls, for the image and
attitude, for the basis of the music. Punk was a reaction against the
self-importance of the popular bands of the mid seventies, progressive
rock bands with songs so understanding and difficult to get to the youth
of Britain that there was a obvious gap in youth culture.
Jazz Music
Jazz Music urbanized in the latter part of the 19th century, from black
work songs, field shouts, sorrow songs, hymns, and spirituals whose
harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic elements were for the most part African.
Because of its unstructured, emotional, and improvisational makeup, and
because it is basically of black origin and connection, jazz has not
been given the degree of recognition it deserves. European spectators
have often been more interested in jazz.
Disco Music
The Discotheque scene started back in the mid 70’s, when clubs starting
playing music on records to the audience. A DJ would spin the records
playing the Disco Hits like “Never can say goodbye” by Gloria Gaynor.
With its driving beats, it almost has a mesmerizing feel that makes you
want to dance or at least tap your foot to the beat. It's really hard to
sit still when you hear a good Disco song – you forget all your troubles
and grin from ear to ear. Many Disco song lyrics are about dancing;
"Dance, dance, dance" & "Everybody Dance", "Come on Dance, Dance",
"Dance yourself dizzy" and so many more.
New Age Music
New Age music was created as a response to rock music. Rock music was
loud and noisy, expressing a teenage spirit. New Age music was quiet and
melodic, put across an adult mood. New Age music had no singer, no drums
and no electric guitar. New age music was, first and foremost, a
mixture. It was a mixture of cultures, moods, genres, formats and
lifestyles. Since each of these components had existed for decades, if
not centuries, new age music pre-existed itself. The most noticeable
predecessor of new age music is classical music. Regardless of the noble
way it was presented in the symphony halls and opera houses, classical
music had included instrumental music from the very beginning.
Gospel Music or
Christian Music
It is a unique occurrence of Americana that had its earliest iterations
toward the end of the nineteenth century. It is folk music that suggests
that it and its worldly counterparts are greatly influenced by each
other. Just as much of the contemporary gospel music of today sounds
like R & B and Hip-Hop, so did most of the early gospel music sound like
the Blues. Gospel, meaning "good news," derived its name from it close
connection with the gospels in the New Testament. As we look at the
ordinary themes we find many references to God’s goodness and mercy.
